A modern home that's stylishly green

You’d think that between an architect, a project manager who trained as an architect, an electrical engineer and a geologist there’d be a way to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew.
“This is embarrassing,” says architect Ivan Martinovic as he struggles with a fork stuck in the cork.



All thoughts of beverage consumption evaporate as Andrej Zdravkovic, 49-year-old electrical engineer and proud new homeowner, demonstrates how his sexy grey-and-red kitchen can double in size with the push of a button: a repurposed garage door lifts to link the already large space with an equally large outdoor deck. This, he says over the hum of the motor, was project manager Ali Malek-Zadeh’s idea.
“With this garage door I saved half of the price of regular windows,” says Mr. Malek-Zadeh pointing to the expanse of glass in the dining area, “and it gives a huge feature to the house.” And heat loss is of no concern, he adds, since the unit is “completely sealed
